Most dogs aren’t known for their pleasant smelling breath. Of course, it’s no wonder because they can’t actually brush their teeth!

Taking the right care of your pets teeth is needed to battle bad dog breath, however a current study shows that there might be even more important benefits – ones that may be important to the life of your pet.

Done at Purdue University by Dr. Larry Glickman the study included the records of over 100,000 dogs. This study included a group that had periodontal disease and an equal size group that did not. It was discovered that there is a statistical link between dogs with gum disease and dogs with heart disease.

The largest connection was with a kind of heart disease known as endocarditis or heart valve inflammation. It was noticed that 0.01 percent of dogs with NO gum disease had heart valve inflammation where 0.15 percent of those with gum disease did have heart valve inflammation.

So, you see it’s important to have a good dog dental program so as to keep your dog happy and healthy.

So, how do you give your dog terrific dental care?

Needless to say, the first step is ensuring that your dog has clean teeth. You want to attempt to brush your dogs teeth each night with dog toothpaste and a dog toothbrush. It’s good to get in the habit of brushing on a daily basis. Daily brushing will aid in reducing tartar buildup and stave off gum disease.

If your dog already has high levels of tarter build up, then you may want to get him to the veterinarian for a dental scaling. This dental procedure is a lot like a cleaning you get at the dentist and involves scraping or scaling the plaque from your dogs teeth..

You can also get dog chews and treats that will assist with your dog dental program. Look for toys like nylabones that are made to help scrape the plaque from teeth. Other treats are created to help with dog breath, especially the Greenies that are made for good canine dental health.

Your dogs ongoing good health depends on good dental care. Surplus tarter and plaque can cause bacteria to be present in your dogs system and this can lead to disease in any major organ.

Giving your dog excellent dental care can help him live a long and healthy life. It simply takes a few moments each day – isn’t your dog worth that much?.
