What causes mange is a tiny parasite known as a mite (or spider-mite). There are three main culprits responsible and each produces a slightly different condition, although all three can share similar symptoms. Most common among house pets (mainly dogs) is a condition called Demodectic or ‘Red’ Mange. It’s a result of too many ‘Demodex canis’ mites populating the hair follicles of the dog’s coat. Dogs with bad cases of mange will be miserable and scratching all the time.
Puppies contracting one or the other forms of mange is considered normal, as their immunity systems aren’t yet sufficiently developed to protect them. In many instances the condition will resolve itself without the need for treatment. There are medicated shampoos available to help counteract the symptoms but the use of stronger, mite-killing agents is rarely recommended for use on puppies.
If an adult dogs suffers from mange symptoms for any period of time it can bring others problems. The dog may be so aggressive in trying to relieve the itch he may literally rub or chew his skin raw. This may foster secondary infections that will require the use of antibiotics to heal. Plus, something will have to be applied to cure the remaining mange symptoms, to prevent further infection.
There are several ways mange can be treated, depending on what type of mange it is and how severe. At one time, the preferred method for treatment was to submerge a dog with mange into a barrel of oil. This method hasn’t been proven to work but there’s often something in these old home remedies. There are several home remedies and ’secret formulas’ being advertised online and some of them claim to be the safest and easiest way to get rid of the problem.
Amitraz is a popular rinse to use on pets as it’s a parasitic rinse which is meant to kill the bugs creating the problem. There are also ointments and creams sometimes prescribed as well as oral medications which are said to work, although they may cause some unpleasant side effects.
